Controversies over the death of NECO Registrar, Prof Godswill Obioma

Unknown gunmen, on Monday night, stormed the residence of the National Examination Council (NECO)’s Registrar, Professor Godswill Obioma, and strangled him to death. 

His wife, Mrs Elizabeth Obioma, told newsmen in a telephone conversation on Tuesday morning that her husband was assassinated, Daily Trust reports.

"The assassins came in and killed him and left without taking anything," she said. 

She said her husband had just returned to Minna from a trip to Abuja when the armed men, lurking in his compound, descended on him and strangled him. 

It was gathered that there have been several attempts to remove the late Registrar from office as the head of NECO. 

Mr Obioma, 67, was appointed head of NECO barely a year ago on May 14, 2020. He hailed from Abia State in Nigeria’s South-East region. 

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, did not pick his call as of the time of filing this report. 

But in a statement by Mustapha K. Abdul Director, For: Registrar/Chief Executive Human Resource Management, titled DEATH OF NECO REGISTRAR/CHIEF EXECUTIVE 

"I am directed to inform all staff of the Council of the death of Prof. Godswill Obioma, Registrar/Chief Executive of the National Examinations Council(NECO), who according to family sources, died yesterday 31 May 2021 after a bricf illness. 

"While staff are enjoined to remain calm, the Council prays for the peaceful repose of his soul."
Futhermore, Niger State Police Command came out said the has Registrar was assassinated by unknown gunmen in Minna.  
The Spokesperson of the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, made the clarification in a statement with Ref. No: AZ:5250/NGS/PPRO/VOL.20/117 on Tuesday. 

"The attention of Niger State Police Command has been drawn to a publication circulating in some section of social media and national dailies that NECO Registrar, Prof. Godswill Obioma was murdered by unknown gunmen in Minna. 

"This story is totally false, untrue and a pure piece of fake news. 

"It is important to state categorically that on 31st May, 2021 the family of the Registrar/CEO National Examinations Council (NECO), Prof Godswill Obioma formally announced that he passed to eternal glory after a brief illness at National Hospital Abuja."
