A gas explosion killed Precious, a female student at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident took place on Thursday in one of the university's off-campus lodges in Ifite, Awka, according to reports.
The inferno is said to have caused injuries to some of the lodge's other occupants.
"The young lady was trapped by a collapsed building wall as a result of the explosion and was burned beyond recognition," a source said.
The incident happened while she was frying popcorn in her room. The lodge is mostly occupied by UNIZIK students who live off campus."
"We attempted to put out the fire ourselves but were unable to do so until the fire department arrived."
Ikenga Tochukwu, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident and said that an investigation was underway.
