Why we detained comedian Cute Abiola - Nigerian Navy

The Nigerian Navy has explained why it is holding Nigerian comedian Abdulgafar A. A., commonly known as Cute Abiola, in custody.

Cute Abiola's family, friends had reported him missing earlier. They later learned that he was locked in a cell after arriving at his office in Navy Town, Lagos.

Commodore Saluman Dahun, the Nigerian Navy's spokeswoman, provided the explanation in a statement.

The statement by the Navy, however, said Cute Abiola was not missing but in detention.
"The Nigerian Navy's attention has been attracted to an online news item claiming that navy personnel, OSCOMP Abdulgafar A. A, who happens to be a popular comedian known as Cute Abiola, has gone missing," the statement read.

The Nigerian Navy desires to unequivocally refute the current online circulating false news claim.

"OSCOMP Abdulgafar is being held in his unit for violating the Armed Forces Social Media Policy and refusing to follow certain directives.

"The Nigerian Navy would like to take advantage of this situation to urge its personnel to follow the Armed Forces Social Media Policy when using social media platforms.

"Among other things, the Policy is in place to preserve their personal safety and security, as well as the information integrity of the Armed Forces of Nigeria's activities."
