About 20 gunmen have invaded the newly relocated abattoir market located in Omumauzor community in the Ukwa West Local Government Area of the State, killing many people.
The incident, which is said to have lasted for over an hour according to a source from the community, said that over seven (7) people were reportedly killed while over seventy (70) cows were slaughtered and other properties at the market destroyed.
The gunmen are said to have launched the attack on the abattoir market in the early hours of today.
According to a source from the community, they had noticed a vehicular movement in the early hours of today without knowing that it was unknown gunmen who were coming to attack the community.
The attack comes barely one week after the State Government announced the relocation of the abattoir market to the Omumauzor Community.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman of Ukwa West LGA, Chief Okey Kanu, in company of a combined team of security agents ranging from the Commander, I44 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Asa, Area Commander in Charge of the Aba Area Command and other stakeholders from the area are currently at the scene of the incident in order to ascertain the true cause of the attack and sympathize with those affected during the incident.
