A mob killed a vigilance group member on Saturday for allegedly making a derogatory speech about Prophet Muhammad.

The killing took place at the Timber Market area of the Fruit Market in Federal Housing Estate, Lugbe, according to the Daily Trust.

According to eyewitnesses, the victim, a Muslim, was aware of the act of insulting the prophet, the most recent of which occurred at midnight on Saturday.

However, the mob action occurred around 1 p.m. on Saturday after seeking refuge in the market's vigilante office.

The local security force was outmanned, according to reports, and he was slain in front of the office before being burned.

"The decease is known as Small Hundaru, and it wasn't the first time he insulted the prophet before the action," said Halilu, a market merchant.

"He was caught after buying food at the afternoon market, because there were just a few people around when the blasphemy occurred, and a stick was used to bash him in the head. He had a gun with him, but it was taken away before the beating.
After that, he was stoned and ran to the office.

"His coworkers were aware, but due to the large number of individuals chasing him, they were unable to protect him. After he was knocked out, petrol was poured over him, and he was burned in front of the office to avoid instilling terror in the market."

The charred tyres used in his burning could be seen, according to the Daily Trust, as businesses shuttered their shops in anticipation of potential unrest.

The scene was calmed by the presence of police officers, however three people were claimed to have been shot by the officers.
