Police officer who flogged man with cutlass dismissed from Police Force

PC Liyomo Okoi, who was seen in a viral video on July 31, 2022, beating a bystander with a machete, has been fired by the Nigerian Police Force.

He was assigned to the Ekori Divisional Police Headquarters in Cross River State and had the force number 524503.

According to a statement made by the force's spokeswoman, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the officer no longer belongs to the NPF as of Monday, August 8.

He warned people not to engage in any official interactions or transactions with him going forward.

"We will always do the needful to sanitise the NPF and uphold the standards and values of the Nigeria Police Force," he said.

Adejobi continued, "The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, has expressed deep disappointment at the charges of extortion and brutality made against some police officers via various public complaint channels, notably on social media platforms.

The IGP has ordered all commanding Commissioners of Police and Tactical/Strategic Commanders to ensure rigorous supervision of their staff members because any such incidents of this sort will be treated harshly, he continued.

''The IGP has also ordered a wholistic overhauling of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), the Special Tactical Squad (STS), and the Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) Units to ensure that their operations are in tandem with the purpose for their creation, and maximum effectiveness and output in line with the mandate of the IGP’s administration and public safety.

"The IGP has therefore directed the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau (AIG-FIB) to carry out supervisory role over the three units to ensure their operations are professional, active and productive and do not infringe on the fundamental rights of the citizenry, and other members of the public," the statement said.
