It has been reported that a fire has broken out at the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Yaba, National Office, in Lagos, early in the morning.
As of the time this story was filed, firefighters from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) had arrived at the scene of the event to put out the fire, according to a report heard on the Lagos radio station Bond FM.
According to eyewitness accounts, a council employee who was reportedly caught between a few stories was seen attempting to jump out a window of the spectacular 12-story structure to avoid being smothered.
Several people are reportedly still trapped inside the structure as the fire spreads.
As of 7.15 am, the cause of the fire, which started at 6.50 am, had not been determined. The high-rise building's midsection had caught fire, and those trapped inside could be heard urgently pleading for assistance.
Shortly WAEC confirm the incident, said: taking to Its Twitter account, the Council confirmed the event, adding that no life was lost to the fire outbreak.
"The Management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), wishes to inform the general public that there was an early morning fire incident at the WAEC National Office, Yaba, Lagos. It was swiftly contained by a combined team of fire fighters.
"Thankfully, no life was lost and all important documents and records are intact."
The cause of the fire is still unconfirmed, however, it has been speculated by various reports that the tragedy was caused by a power surge in one of the offices.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency are yet to make any official statement at the time of filing this report.
