The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been directed to immediately begin Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) till 90 days before the 2023 general elections by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja.
In his ruling, Justice Ekwo further instructed INEC to make sure that all eligible Nigerians receive voter registration cards in time for the upcoming election.
He maintained that the electoral umpire had a duty under the constitution to ensure that the election was conducted in conformity with Nigerian law.
One Anajat Salmat and three other people sued INEC, claiming that the electoral authority cannot halt voter registration in violation of the constitution's outlined provisions.
They pleaded with the court to direct the electoral umpire to resume the process in conformity with national law.
After a one-month extension, INEC terminated the CVR in July after the Federal High Court dismissed a lawsuit brought by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), which wanted to extend the exercise through June 30, 2022.
