Former Barcelona captain and former professional Spanish footballer Gerard Pique has explained why he left the game at age 35.

In his moving farewell statement on Saturday night at Camp Nou, he gave the club's supporters an explanation of his early retirement.

He claimed that it was the appropriate moment to "provide room" to Barcelona.

Pique stated, "Playing for Barca has been a romance filled with a lot of love and emotion. I believe that it was the proper time to give one another some distance.

I firmly believe that the moment has come to split ways, but I will return here in the future.

Pique assisted the Catalan powerhouses in winning fifteen trophies throughout the course of his career, including eight La Liga championships and three Champions Leagues.

The seasoned defender played his farewell game for the Catalan giants on Saturday in their 2-0 victory against Almeria at Camp Nou, contrary to the expectations of many fans who thought he would be selected for Spain's World Cup squad in November 2022 in Qatar.
