A tourist submersible called the Titan went missing on Sunday, June 19, 2023, while on a dive to the Titanic wreck site. The submersible was carrying five people: the pilot, three passengers, and a safety diver. Contact with the submersible was lost about an hour and 45 minutes into the dive.
The Titan is a 21-foot submersible that is designed to carry up to five people. It has a maximum depth of 12,500 feet and can stay submerged for up to 96 hours. The submersible is equipped with a variety of safety features, including an emergency beacon and a life raft.
The search and rescue operation for the Titan is being led by the US Coast Guard and the Canadian Coast Guard. The search area is about 900 miles east of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Sonar equipment is being used to search for the submersible, but so far no sign of it has been found.
The families of the missing people are being kept updated on the search efforts. The Coast Guard has said that they are "hopeful" that the submersible will be found and that the people on board will be rescued.
The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg. The wreck of the Titanic lies about 370 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. It is one of the most famous shipwrecks in the world.
The search for the Titan is a reminder of the dangers of diving to the Titanic wreck site. The water in the area is very cold and there is a risk of decompression sickness. The Titanic wreck is also surrounded by debris, which can pose a hazard to divers.
The search for the Titan is ongoing. The Coast Guard has said that they will continue the search until they have exhausted all possibilities.
