Court orders DSS to allow Kanu access to medical records, doctors
On July 20, 2023, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to allow Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), access to medical doctors of his choice and his medical records.

The ruling was made in response to a suit filed by Kanu's legal team, which demanded that his doctors be allowed to conduct an independent examination to ascertain his actual state of health.

While the medical examination must be supervised by the DSS and recorded for security purposes, Kanu is constitutionally entitled to access both medical doctors of his choice and his medical records despite being held in custody.
