Abia State Government has taken a step to prohibit the use of motorcycles, commonly referred to as 'Okada', in Umuahia, the state's capital, as well as Aba, its bustling commercial hub.
The decision was conveyed through a press release by Mr. Kazie Uko, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, on Sunday. While the statement didn't elaborate on the reasons behind the ban, it outlined that the ban would go into effect starting from Monday, August 14.
The announcement stated, "Commencing from Monday, August 14, 2023, any motorcycle found operating for this purpose on the streets of Umuahia and Aba townships will be confiscated by law enforcement agencies." The statement also emphasized that security agencies have been instructed to apprehend anyone caught violating the ban, potentially leading to legal actions. The public has been urged to adhere to this directive.
