Daniel Noboa has won Ecuador's presidential election, defeating Luisa González. The centre-right candidate secured 52.30 percent of the vote, while González, from the camp of former president Rafael Correa, received 47.7 percent.

The election had a voter turnout of about 82 percent. The campaign was marked by the killing of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, who vowed to tackle corruption and crime.

Seven suspects linked to Villavicencio's murder were found dead in prison recently. Noboa is an heir to a banana business empire. The election was held after the National Assembly was dissolved amid impeachment proceedings against the former president.
